Songs for Christmas, #1: A Winter Haiku

Robed in a Garment of Untrodden Snow, W.C. Bauer, 1888, via the National Gallery of Art, open access

Earlier this year, in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day, I wrote a series of seven (mostly poetry) posts here at The Flummoxed, with each post accompanied by an open access piece of art from the National Gallery of Art. I enjoyed doing that series so much that I decided to hold another such series for Christmas! Now, this series will be twelve days long in honor of the twelve days of Christmas, and the series will last from December 14th to December 25th, even though the twelve days of Christmas actually begin on December 25th. With that being said, here is day one.

“A Winter Haiku”

Frost makes fields brittle.
Crystal ice coats dying trees.
Red cardinals sing.
